On January 11, we did one of the coolest things to do in Mobile. We visited the coast guard base. Since we’re biomed, we first went into their health resources building. In this building, we first met a dentist, and the most interesting part of this interaction was that we learned in the military you just walk into your local clinic on base get checked up on then leave without paying a dime. The doctors and nurses are either military or citizens that are brought in and then compensated well to do the work. Somebody also asked the forbidden question during this time which is “How much do you make,” and non-surprisingly the dentist avoided the question. Next up in the building was some lung capacity and eyesight test while we were walking through I felt they were mostly showing us stuff that pertained to pilots. Then the exciting stuff happened we got led to the flight simulation room. First, my group went to go fly the plane simulation where you could change what place you were in the world and how the difficulty level by adding clouds and then trying to land the plane. I did not crash the plane and whether or not I tried to land it was irrelevant, but my future flying partner Cammie Waite died without even trying to land the plane. I say this because, during the helicopter simulation, we crashed and died mainly because I think we have two different definitions of which way is left and which way is right. After eating we went to go see some of the rescue vehicles like the standard rescue chopper everyone has seen before, then we moved to a different hanger with much bigger planes that could hold up to 27 people, the whole time we were looking at the planes there were people doing maintenance on the planes or they were doing something for their class on the helicopters. Speaking of class since we were high school visitors they had to tell us about all the benefits of joining the military instead of going the normal college track, but the one thing every place we go to does wrong during this presentation time is that they make the room perfect to go to sleep in. I’m talking lights dimmed and temperature just cold enough, but not too cold, and some dude with the most relaxing voice. It was safe to say we were wavering between learning about our nation and our imaginations. I think this is probably one of the coolest things we’ve done in biomed, but the only reason why I would join the military is to get those sunglasses, which apparently the movie Top Gun saved.
