On Wednesday, March 16, our class was visited by a St. Lukes's Senior Savannah Jeane who spoke about the career she is interested in which is Forensic Nursing. These nurses provide care for those experiencing acute and long-term health consequences associated with victimization or violence. Forensic nurses have sub careers like Legal Nurse Consultants, Correctional Nurses, Nurse Coroner or Death Investigator, and lastly a Sexual Assult Nurse Examiner (SANE). The activity was extracting DNA from a strawberry, this was to resemble leftover sperm on an SA victim. Essentially we crushed up the strawberry in a bag to get the juices out, after filtering out the chunky part we added alcohol to the mixture to be able to see the DNA more clearly after shaking. Savannah's activity was the most fun out of all senior kid's presentations and at the same time the most serious. It was a really good and effective job.
