This was a rather full week despite the fact that we were off Monday for Labor Day. This Wednesday we went to go tour Saad Hospice and it was really nice. Most hospice centers I’ve been in have been very dark and almost dehumanizing. It’s like you’d be living in a constant hospital setting, but at Saad, it was entirely different. It's called the “Retreat,” and it sure lives up to the name. The building is set up like a log cabin and the interior decoration makes it look like one too. All the wood on the inside came from local trees and the rooms are designed more like hotels than a terminal care facility. All of the medical technologies are hidden away so it’s not the centerpiece of the building. We got an official tour by one of their nurses and she described the process of working in a hospice environment and how Saad was different. My question was how many people could they sit at once, and it’s only 24 which I believe is quite small compared to other places. They are spread across the North and South Wings and in different rooms named after the wood that built them such as Pine, Oak, Magnolia, and Birch I believe. I really loved it there and also know several other medical professionals who work there, so I’m actually now considering volunteering at Saad Hospice.
The next day we came back and did our weekly skills lab. I was a patient getting a HEENT assessment by Dr. Dolbear. He made me cry. Not sad tears but I strained my eyes a little too hard trying to peer at the vision chart. We learned how to check for lice, and properly enter a room. Knock on the door, state your name, walk up state what you’ll be doing as you wash your hands, and then begin. Then Friday I experienced my first loss at the Biomedical Balderdash raking in a total of zero points, allowing my classmate Ria to catch up. This definitely will not happen next week because I’m going to be the Balderdash champion, mainly because it’d be embarrassing for a Latin scholar to lose to people who never learned about derivatives.
My lovely Doctor...
