We had a hectic week in biomed this week. At the start of this week we got our research papers returned to us, and oh boy do I have a lot of corrections to make. Along with that, we continued our hard work on our capstone presentations. This week I switched my presentation entirely over from Slidebean to Powerpoint, which was not fun. Slidebean is a presentation software that allows an AI to edit slides for you, which is what I wanted because my presentation is about AI in radiology; however, to share, add transitions, and transfer the presentation you have to pay an initial fee of $150 dollars per year. This makes it not very friendly for a student user like me. What I ended up doing was copying the formatting made by AI into my PowerPoint. For the assignments revolving around the presentation this week we had to record ourselves speaking and also present in front of an audience. My audience was my dad and he made this assignment unnecessarily difficult because he didn’t want to critique anything I had to say making a ten-minute assignment into a 30-minute one. Despite all the work this week, we did calm down with art therapy.
Art Therapy to my surprise has been recognized as an official branch of therapy since the 1940s, and I can see why it’d be helpful. It can be used to help kids express themselves at crime scenes whether by making them more comfortable or as a way to interpret what might have happened. When we did art therapy it was meant ot be a calming experience, we did anxiety relief as well as breathing meditation. Our anxiety relief was free drawing loops and then coloring them in to make a pretty image, the best part about this way is that no one can judge the way you draw. The breathing exercise was us tracing our own breath pattern. Drawing up a line with each inhale and down the line with an exhale. If you are breathing properly then your breaths should be slowly descending, it took me a while to mimic this effect showing I wasn’t fully focused on breathing.
On Wednesday we left the school to go to a Toast Masters meeting. Toast Masters is an international organization that focuses on improving people's speech and leadership abilities. We attended a meeting to obtain skills for our capstone project. The theme was “urbs and spices,” and the meeting followed a strict agenda. Through it they analyzed each other's speech keeping track of filler words said such as “umm,” and “so,” and also looking at each other's prepared and surprised speeches. Through the meeting, they normally have two speakers they analyze, but we only had one and her speech was about the domino effect. The surprise speeches were about what food would you cook your kidnapper and is a tomato a vegetable or a fruit. Since I couldn’t answer those questions there I can here! I would cook my kidnappers something with onion seasoning since I hate onions, but onion powder goes on everything so it would work. For the second question, I would argue that a tomato is a vegetable because it is usually served in vegetable based dishes like salads, and even hamburgers. Overall Toastmasters was fun and made me think about my speech more.
