On January 17th we were graced by the wonderful Dr. Gupta’s presence. She essentially gave us a broad rundown of radiology. Dense things show up white on a z ray like coins, bones, and spoons. The important stuff because I want to be a radiologist which is that radiologists do 13 years of training (he said crying on the inside) 5 years of residency 1 or 2 years of fellowship. A radiology technician does the physical work while the radiologist owns the business, therefore, owning the blame for anything going wrong and getting more money for doing less work. Fluoroscopy is a video and a CT scan slices the body to make abnormalities more obvious. I think the most important thing learned was that the Beatles contributed to radiology because Godfrey a person responsible for creating the CT scan bought the rights to a Beatles album to get funding for the machine. Also, nuclear medicine injects radioactive material to do a scan, but since this is a non-invasive way to study one’s body the payoff is generally worth the risk, especially since if your getting a stronger scan your chances of dying from whats harming you is greater than dying from the radiation from the scan.
