BATMAN!!!

On November 11th we had a real-life superhero come to speak to us her name was Batwoman, a.k.a Stephanie Fisher. From the University of South Alabama, she has a degree in biology and chemistry with a master's in public admin. She works at the Alabama Department of Forensic Scientists, forensic science is the study of how science applies to the law. Forensic scientists analyze evidence and present it to a court of law. While you are reading my blog, I will tell you about the many different types of forensic science that I found interesting. Drug chemistry scientists are responsible for testing the drug itself and toxicology analyzes bodily fluids. At the same time, DNA is newer so they have more generic things when you think of forensic science like any leftover evidence such as gun marks and DNA strands. Fun fact that we learned Marihuana is the traditional spelling of Marijuana and is how it is spelled in Alabama law. These scientists also have many tools in their Batcave like the Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer (try saying that four times too fast) which gives identification based on molecular structure. She also gave us a lot of insight into drugs like cocaine hydrochloride is powdered cocaine you snort or inject, which is different than crack cocaine which is smokeable and has a more basic pH. The last thing is the idea that makes up this field of study: Lochard’s principle, “whenever 2 objects come into contact, a mutual, exchange of matter will take place between them.” This is what real-life bat people can teach you so thank you, Stephanie Fisher.
