On September 26, the bio-med II class went on a visit to the University of Mobile. To be honest it was a whole lot better than I thought it would be. We started off with an amazing vocal performance by their choir and then the medical staff of the school talked to us until eventually we worked up to the president. Each doctor let their personalities shine through in their anecdote to give us an authentic presentation.
After we left from the theatre, we got to go to the college of medicine building, and we first went to the 2nd floor where on the right we went into the simulation lab where we got augmented reality glasses. With these glasses I'm sure I looked really silly because I was just grabbing air and yelling, "it's not working!!!" Once the professor told me how they worked I was able to see the simulated birth of the baby on the googles. As birthing babies are it was definitely weird but also definitely cool. Next, we went to the other side of the room and met this hyper realistic manakin. There the professor told us to identify which pulse wasn't on as the manakin had pulses, breathes, and a heartbeat. Thanks to our previous year of training in the field of pulses we were able to identify it as the radial pulse.
Then we went to the room on the left which was the cadaver lab where we saw the undergrads that were working with a cadaver. We didn't get to see the cadaver for legal reasons, but we did see a human knee bone, and I asked a really stupid question about what the word gross means. After that we went to lunch where I saw my nana and my old band mate Reese.
Despite this being a really cool experience, I'm not going for state colleges, so the university isn't on my list, but I still had a great time and learned a lot in the class we sat in on. In short, the adventure was a good one.
